How To Mount Kitchen Wall Cabinets?
Installing kitchen wall cabinets on your house can be a day-long project. But if you prepare appropriately and follow the steps below, you can turn this project into a weekend task in no time.
Step 1: Empty and Remove Existing Cabinets
First, remove the doors and drawers from the cabinets. Then, detach the cabinets from the wall and remove them. If the cabinets are securely attached and difficult to remove, gently pry them off using a utility knife.
Step 2: Mark Wall Studs
Before mounting the cabinets, locate the wall studs. Use a stud finder or tap the wall lightly with a hammer to detect solid areas. Mark the location of the studs.
Step 3: Measure and Mark Cabinet Positions
Measure the width of the cabinets and mark their positions on the wall. Use a level to ensure that the marks are level. Transfer the marks to the back of the cabinets.
Step 4: Mount Railing or Cleats
Attach a horizontal railing or support cleats to the wall. This will provide support for the bottom of the cabinets. Ensure that the railing or cleats are level and at the correct height.
Step 5: Lift and Hang the Cabinets
Carefully lift and hang the cabinets on the railing or cleats. Drive screws through the back of the cabinets into the studs.
Step 6: Level and Secure the Cabinets
Use a level to check if the cabinets are level both vertically and horizontally. Adjust the screws as necessary to level the cabinets. Secure the cabinets to the wall using additional screws for added stability.
Step 7: Attach Doors and Drawers
Reinstall the cabinet doors and drawers. Check that they open and close smoothly. If necessary, adjust the hinges or drawer slides to ensure proper alignment.
Step 8: Fill Nail Holes and Paint
Fill any nail holes with wood filler and allow it to dry. Sand the filler smooth. Touch up any visible paint scratches or marks.
Step 9: Seal Gaps
Apply caulk around the edges of the cabinets for a neat and sealed finish. Use a damp cloth to smooth the caulk.
Additional Tips:
- Use a level throughout the process to ensure that the cabinets are aligned correctly.
- Double-check the measurements before making any cuts or drilling holes.
- Get assistance from another person when lifting and hanging the cabinets.
- Protect your floors by laying down a drop cloth during the installation.
