How to Change Out Kitchen Faucet
Replacing a kitchen faucet is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials. By following these step-by-step instructions, even a novice DIYer can tackle this task with confidence.
Materials Needed:
- New kitchen faucet
- Basin wrench
- Adjustable wrench
- Pliers
- Thread seal tape
- Plumber's putty (optional)
- Screwdriver
Step 1: Prepare the Work Area
Start by shutting off the water supply to the faucet. This is typically done by turning a valve located under the sink or behind the dishwasher. Once the water is off, open the faucet to release any remaining water in the line.
Step 2: Disconnect the Water Lines
Use the basin wrench to loosen the nuts that connect the water supply lines to the faucet. Be careful not to overtighten the nuts, as this can damage the lines.
Step 3: Remove the Old Faucet
Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the faucet in place. Once the nuts are loose, lift the faucet up and out of the sink.
Step 4: Apply Thread Seal Tape and Plumber's Putty
Wrap thread seal tape around the threads of the new faucet's water supply lines. This will help prevent leaks. If your sink is made of a material that can scratch easily, you may also want to apply a bead of plumber's putty around the base of the faucet where it will meet the sink.
Step 5: Install the New Faucet
Insert the new faucet into the sink and align it with the holes for the water supply lines. Tighten the nuts that hold the faucet in place using the adjustable wrench.
Step 6: Connect the Water Lines
Connect the water supply lines to the new faucet and tighten the nuts using the basin wrench.
Step 7: Turn on the Water and Test
Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If you find any leaks, tighten the nuts further until the leak stops.
Step 8: Finalize Installation
Use a screwdriver to install the handles and any other necessary components.
