Double Bowl Kitchen Sink Drain Kit

A double bowl kitchen sink is a popular choice for many homeowners because it offers the convenience of having two separate sinks for different tasks. However, if the drain kit is not properly installed, it can lead to leaks and other problems. This guide will provide step-by-step instructions on how to install a double bowl kitchen sink drain kit.

Materials you will need:

  • Double bowl kitchen sink
  • Double bowl kitchen sink drain kit
  • Plumber's putty
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Basin wrench
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses

Step 1: Remove the old drain kit

If there is an existing drain kit, you will need to remove it before you can install the new one. To do this, first turn off the water supply to the sink. Then, use an adjustable wrench to loosen the slip nuts that hold the drain kit in place. Once the slip nuts are loose, you can remove the old drain kit by hand.

Step 2: Clean the sink drain holes

Once the old drain kit is removed, you will need to clean the sink drain holes. Use a flashlight to inspect the drain holes and remove any debris or old plumber's putty. Also, check for any cracks or damage to the drain holes. If you find any damage, you will need to repair it before you can install the new drain kit.

Step 3: Apply plumber's putty to the new drain kit

Before you install the new drain kit, you will need to apply plumber's putty to the flange of the drain. Plumber's putty is a type of sealant that will help to create a watertight seal between the drain kit and the sink. To apply plumber's putty, simply roll it into a rope and then press it around the flange of the drain.

Step 4: Install the new drain kit

Once you have applied plumber's putty to the drain kit, you can now install it in the sink. To do this, first insert the drain kit into the drain hole. Then, tighten the slip nuts that hold the drain kit in place. Be sure to tighten the slip nuts evenly so that the drain kit is secure. However, do not overtighten the slip nuts, as this can damage the drain kit or the sink.

Step 5: Connect the P-trap

The P-trap is a curved pipe that connects the drain kit to the drainpipe. The P-trap is designed to trap water, which helps to prevent sewer gases from entering the sink. To connect the P-trap, simply insert the end of the P-trap into the drainpipe. Then, tighten the slip nut that holds the P-trap in place. Be sure to tighten the slip nut evenly so that the P-trap is secure. However, do not overtighten the slip nut, as this can damage the P-trap or the drainpipe.

Step 6: Turn on the water supply and check for leaks

Once the P-trap is connected, you can turn on the water supply to the sink. Check for any leaks around the drain kit and the P-trap. If you find any leaks, tighten the slip nuts until the leaks stop. Be careful not to overtighten the slip nuts, as this can damage the drain kit or the P-trap.

Step 7: Finish the installation

Once you have checked for leaks and tightened the slip nuts, you can finish the installation by placing the sink stopper in the drain hole. The sink stopper will help to keep water in the sink when it is not in use.
