How Do You Fix a Kitchen Faucet?

A leaky kitchen faucet is a common problem that can waste water and increase your water bill. Fortunately, it's usually a relatively easy fix that you can do yourself with a few basic tools.

The first step is to determine where the leak is coming from. Is it coming from the handle, the spout, or the base of the faucet? Once you know where the leak is, you can start troubleshooting.

Handle Leak

If the leak is coming from the handle, it's likely due to a worn-out washer. Washers are small, rubber gaskets that create a seal between the handle and the faucet body. Over time, washers can wear out and start to leak.

To replace a washer, you'll need to remove the handle. Depending on the type of faucet, you may need to use a screwdriver or an Allen wrench. Once the handle is removed, you'll see the washer. Simply remove the old washer and replace it with a new one.

Spout Leak

If the leak is coming from the spout, it could be due to a number of things, including a worn-out O-ring, a cracked spout, or a loose connection.

O-Ring Leak

An O-ring is a small, rubber gasket that creates a seal between the spout and the faucet body. Over time, O-rings can wear out and start to leak.

To replace an O-ring, you'll need to remove the spout. Depending on the type of faucet, you may need to use a screwdriver or an Allen wrench. Once the spout is removed, you'll see the O-ring. Simply remove the old O-ring and replace it with a new one.

Cracked Spout

If the spout is cracked, you'll need to replace it. To do this, you'll need to remove the spout and then unscrew the old spout from the faucet body. Apply plumber's putty to the threads of the new spout and then screw it into the faucet body.

Once the new spout is installed, tighten it securely.

Loose Connection

If the leak is coming from the base of the faucet, it's likely due to a loose connection. To tighten the connection, you'll need to use a wrench to tighten the nuts that hold the faucet to the sink.

Once you've tightened the nuts, turn on the water and check for leaks. If the leak is still there, you may need to replace the faucet.
